Samplers - Primitive Samplers
The oldest surviving Samplers were made in the 15th and 16th centuries. Instead of having preprinted patterns a needleworker would stitch a small sample of an interesting stitch or pattern on a piece of cloth, "sampler" in order to remember it.
The earliest known surviving sampler was made by Jan Bostocke which includes her name and the date 1598 in the inscription. There is documentary of sampler making as early as 1502 but these samplers are not know to have survived.
Borders were added to Primitive Samplers in the 17th century, alphabets and religious or moral qoutations became common during this era. By the 18th century sewing samplers had evolved into organized demonstrations of skill rather than to preserve knowledge.
