Rowe Salt Glazed Pottery

A Process Dating Back To 12th Century Germany
Rowe's salt-glaze firing process uses traditional methods to create Historical Pottery. Each piece begins as a raw lump of clay that is shaped by an artisan. After drying and hand decorating, the final step, firing, begins. Firing is a 14 hour process in which the temperature in the kiln is slowly raised to drive out the water, burn out the impurities and vitrify the clay.
The kiln will reach temperatures of up to 1,600 degrees, then the kiln is starved of its oxygen supply. When this happens the kiln will draw oxygen out of the clay, changing its color from a light terra cotta to a stark grey. The temperature continues to rise to over 2,000 degrees were it is held for 30 minutes. Now the key ingredient is added, salt is injected into the kiln. The chemical reaction that takes place produces the slight sheen of glaze. The kiln is then rapidly cooled to "freeze' the glaze locking in Rowe's signature grey color.
The Avignon Collection

Honoring Old World Tradition
In this collection you will find bold colors, creamy backgrounds and fluted shapes accompanied by looping handles.
Rowe artisans like the potters of yesteryear create vessels and containers that serve the purpose of everyday life. Heavy pitchers for drinking water, canisters to preserve the freshly ground grains, a covered crock to preserve the fall harvest. These and many more make up the Avignon Collection.
The Provincial Collection
