History Of Candles
Candles were one of the most primitive methods of light, having been around for several thousand years. The Romans are credited with developing the wick candle, composed mainly of tallow from animals. This crude candle gave of a smoky unpleasant odor. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that it was discovered that beeswax creates a cleaner burning candle but the cost of beeswax candles limited sales to the wealthy.
During America’s early years Colonial candle makers boiled bayberry bushes to extract a wax that burned clean while giving off a sweet aroma. In the 18th century the whaling industry brought significant changes to candle making. It was discovered that a wax made by crystallizing oil from the sperm whale was clean burning and economical. This wax was a much harder wax than tallow or beeswax and therefore could withstand the summer heat without bending or melting.
The 19th century brought major changes to the candle making industry. Inventors like Joseph Morgan introduced machines which molded candles continuously. During this era paraffin became the wax of preference, its availability made it even more economical than its predecessors. However it brought with it a challenge of its own, it was too soft to withstand the summer heat. This was resolved by adding stearic acid, making candles once again durable.
With the invention of the light bulb candle makers faced yet another challenge. The candle was no longer needed as a major source of light. Today candles have not lost their popularity or usefulness. We use them to symbolize celebration or define a ceremony. They are used as accent décor or to set the mood for a room.
